Precautions Before Using Atkins

You are probably raring to start Atkins and begin losing weight. But there are two medically important steps and several practical preparations that will lay the groundwork for your success. First, a crucial warning: People with severe kidney disease (creatinine over 2.4) should not do any phase of Atkins unless ordered to do so by their physician. Also, pregnant women and nursing mothers may do the Lifetime Maintenance phase but should not do any of the weight loss phases of Atkins. The first thing you must do is review any medications you take and make a doctor’s appointment to get a complete physical, including some blood work and other tests. I’d like you to understand why having a medical workup before beginning Atkins is so important, both from a health perspective and to help motivate you to follow the program faithfully.

Over-the-counter and certain prescription drugs can interfere with weight loss.

Get a medical checkup to determine your overall physical health and have blood and other tests done that will serve as a baseline for comparison later.

A five-hour glucose-tolerance test with insulin levels will evaluate the degree of stress on your glucoseinsulin-regulating mechanism before you begin Atkins.

Typically, after six weeks doing Atkins, you can expect to see improvement in virtually all health indicators.

Practical and psychological preparation is also key to success on Atkins.

Induction Phase is designed to do all of the following for you:

Efficiently switch your body from a carbohydrate-burning metabolism to a primarily fat- burning (your fat!) metabolism.

Stabilize your blood sugar and abruptly halt a myriad of symptoms indicative of unstable blood sugar, such as fatigue, mood swings, brain fog and an inability to function at your best.

Curb your cravings by stabilizing your blood sugar.

Break addictions to foods such as sugar, wheat or corn derivatives, alcohol, caffeine, grain or any other food. For people addicted to sugary, high-carb or high-glycemic foods just as for alcoholics-moderation simply does not work.

Knock your socks off by demonstrating how much body fat you can burn, while eating liberally, even luxuriously, off the fat of the land.
The Induction phase is not going to be your lifelong way of eating. It will last a minimum of fourteen days, after which you should see a significant result. In a later phase, I will teach you a series of steps that will enable you to craft your own personalized eating plan. This plan will be geared to create the best possible balance between your metabolic responses, your tastes and lifestyle and your total health profile.

12 Rules of Atkins The First 14 Days

I want you to memorize the following twelve rules as though your life depends upon it.
1. Eat either three regular-size meals a day or four or five smaller meals. Do not skip meals or go more than six waking hours without eating.

2. Eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein in the form of poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs and red meat, as well as of pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold- pressed).

3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three cups-loosely packed-of salad, or two cups of salad.

4. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.

5. Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable foods list. And that means absolutely nothing! Your “just this one taste won’t hurt” rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.

6. Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied but not stuffed. When not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements.

7. Don’t assume any food is low in carbohydrate-instead read labels! Check the carb count (it’s on every package) or use the carbohydrate gram counter in this book.

8. Eat out as often as you wish but be on guard for hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings. Gravy is often made with flour or cornstarch, and sugar is sometimes an ingredient in salad dressing.

9. Avoid foods or drinks sweetened with aspartame. Instead, use sucralose or saccharin. Be sure to count each packet of any of these as 1 gram of carbs.

10. Avoid coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar.

11. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat.

12. If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables.

Here are five common pitfalls to avoid:

1. During Induction you must not eat any fruit, bread, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter.
2. Stay away from diet products unless they specifically state “no carbohydrates.” Most such foods are for low-fat diets, not controlled carbohydrate plans.

I know from personal experience and from the comments of thousands of diet users just how tightly the lid of metabolic obesity seems to press down. Fortunately, there is a key to unlatch this box. A perfectly natural bodily process called lipolysis can lift up the lid and let hope shine in.

The definition of lipolysis sounds like Nirvana to a person longing to lose weight. It means “the process of dissolving fat.” Isn’t that exactly why we’re all gathered here today? Now I will tell you the “secret” to unlocking the latent power of lipolysis.

How does lipolysis work?

Lipolysis simply means that you’re burning your fat stores and using them as the source of fuel they were meant to be.The by-products of burning fat are ketones. When your body releases ketones-which it will do in your breath and your urine-it is chemical proof that you’re consuming your own stored fat. Once more, for emphasis: When a person on a safe, controlled carbohydrate plan such as mine is releasing ketones, he or she is in the fat-dissolving state of lipolysis. This process is simply the most efficient path ever devised for getting you slim. And the more ketones you release, the more fat you have dissolved.

Lipolysis is the biochemical method of weight loss-the alternative to using glucose for fuel, the very process that has made you heavy. Lipolysis can be your life raft, giving you both slimness and health, and distancing you from the obese person’s perils of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Most of all, of course, it is the key to achieving your goalto use up the fat stored on your body.

The phenomenon of lipolysis or fat burning being the major alternative fuel system has been so well researched that it is simply not disputed in academic circles. It is scientific fact.

Importance of Lipolysis

Lipolysis is the biochemical process of dissolving fat.

When you dissolve fat, it breaks down into glycerol and other fatty acids, which in turn break down into byproducts called ketones. When this happens you are enjoying a state called ketosis.

Phen375 initiates ketosis by Inducing fat burning.

Simple Answer: It is because of hyperinsulism

What Is Hyperinsulism?

Simply put, hyperinsulinism is the condition that results from too much insulin being produced by your body. It’s easy to see how this might happen when you realize that there’s a relationship between the kinds of foods you eat and the amount of insulin in your bloodstream.

Foods rich in carbohydrates-especially sugar, honey, milk and fruit, which contain simple sugars, and refined carbohydrates such as flour, white rice and potato starch-are readily absorbed through the stomach, so they speedily convert to glucose. When these foods are eaten in excess, they require a lot of insulin for transport. Foods made of protein and fat, on the other hand, require little or no insulin. (Protein in excess converts to glucose in the liver and requires some insulin to transport it to the cells; fat requires essentially none.)

And what happens when there is too much insulin? As an overweight person becomes heavier, insulin’s effectiveness may decline. The cells become desensitized to the action of insulin so it can no longer effectively transport glucose to them. This is known in medical circles as insulin resistance, which quickly leads to hyperinsulinism. Numerous studies have shown that insulin resistance is more prevalent among the obese, although even some individuals who appear slim and healthy may actually be insulin resistant.

What appears to happen is that the insulin receptors on the surfaces of the body’s cells are blocked, which in turn prevents glucose from reaching the cells for energy use. That’s one reason overweight individuals may be tired much of the time. When insulin is ineffective in taking glucose into the cells, the liver converts more and more glucose to stored fat. Your body is, in fact, becoming a fat-producing machine instead of an efficient energy-producing machine.

Your body’s hormonal system is now in desperate straits. At this point, insulin is being secreted more and more frequently to deal with high blood-sugar levels, and it is doing its job less and less effectively. Which makes you crave sweets and carbs, which compounds the problem in a vicious cycle. In time, even the insulin receptors that convert glucose to fat start getting worn out, forecasting diabetes.

Food-obsessive behavior is common. But some of the tougher cases fall beyond the scope of Groups A, B or C and can be a challenge to cure even by doing Atkins. Individuals who binge and fantasize and almost live for food are as much between a rock and a hard place as an alcoholic or a heroin addict. For these people, the best hope is still a metabolic approach to their problem.

Gordon Lingard, a real estate executive, was an extreme example. He was 53 years old when he came to see me, and his five-foot ten-inch frame carried 306 pounds. Gordon had progressed from a normal weight in college (when he was a lifeguard) to extreme obesity by his late twenties. His weight had gone as high as 450 pounds. He had no hormonal imbalances, and he had tried everything-stomach stapling, emetics, laxatives and every diet from B to Z.

Gordon was as inexplicable to himself as to the many doctors he had consulted. All he knew was that he had to eat. The cravings were indescribable. He told me he was constantly planning his next binge. Gallons of ice cream disappeared as swiftly as an ordinary carbohydrate addict downs a candy bar. Sugar was Gordon’s master obsession. “There was never a moment I didn’t desire it,” he recalls. “Often I would shake until I could put some sugar in my mouth. The symptoms were totally physical, and they were really frightening.

For me there was nothing else but food. I had an hour’s drive from my office to my home, and I knew every restaurant, every diner, every candy machine and every soft drink dispenser along the whole route.” I’d wager you’d be willing to bet Gordon Lingard’s obsession was almost entirely psychological-but you’d be wrong. What I’d like you to realize is that Gordon’s problem was only a more extreme version of the problems so many overweight people have. His difficulties were basically metabolic difficulties, and they could be solved metabolically. By doing Atkins & using Phen375 Gordon reached his goal weight for the first time in thirty years, and he no longer feels driven to consume sugar. Gordon had failed repeatedly on low-fat/low-calorie diets. And that’s not surprising. His problem lay in his metabolic response to carbohydrates. To solve an out-of-control situation like this by restricting calories without restricting carbohydrates is like marching into the surf planning to turn back the ocean.Learn more on Phen375.

Dr.Atkin Proven Rules – Read first:

It is not true that the only way to lose weight is to limit your intake of calories.

When you control carbohydrate consumption sufficiently, your body will switch from burning glucose, derived from carbohydrate, to burning primarily fat as its energy source.

You burn more calories when your body is operating on a fat metabolism.

Atkins has repeatedly been proven to take off more fat than other weight loss programs when an equal number of calories is consumed.

By drastically increasing the intake of carbohydrate, the American diet has changed dramatically in the past sixty years.

In the past twenty years the incidence of lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease has increased by leaps and bounds.

Is it true that the Atkins Approach is really just another low-calorie diet?

Some people think this, but it’s not true. Atkins isn’t about counting calories. Those who are doing Atkins may be eating fewer calories as a result of being less hungry and less obsessed with food. This occurs for two reasons:
1. Stable blood sugar throughout the day ensures that you will have fewer food cravings or false hunger pains.

2. The food eaten by a person doing Atkins (meat, fish, cheese, nuts, eggs, low-sugar/low- starch vegetables and fruit) is less processed and more nutritious than the typical pre- Atkins menu. Give a body fewer empty calories, provide it with more nutrient-dense alternatives, and the body will logically be satisfied sooner and require less food.
Starting TIPS:

• Eliminate from your kitchen sugar and all products that contain sugar.

• When grocery shopping, stick to the aisles on the perimeters of the store. The center aisles are where the junk food and processed food lurk.

• Look for-and purchase-the ever-increasing selection of controlled carbohydrate food alternatives to low-fat, high-sugar foods.

• Use a carbohydrate gram counter-such as the one bound into this book-to count carbs.

• Even if you are not trying to lose weight, avoid the typical high-carb breakfast choices such as toast, muffins, bagels and cereal.

What would you like from a weight loss program? Are you looking for these?

be freed from hunger much of the day?

eat until you are pleasantly satisfied and full?

enjoy foods so rich that you’ve never seen them on any other diet?

reduce your appetite via a perfectly natural metabolic function of the body?

never have to count calories again?

eliminate addictive food patterns?

experience steady weight loss, even if you have had dramatic failures or weight regain in the past?

learn a way of eating that will keep any lost weight from coming back?

enjoy enhanced energy?

feel better than you have in years?

be more attractive? bolster your self-confidence?

improve health problems that have accompanied your excess weight?

minimize your risk factors for certain diseases?

slow the aging process?

The Not Gaining Weight Mystery

Now we are going to get to the bottom of a mystery and one of the great inequities of life. I bet you know people who eat more than you do, exercise less and yet never seem to put on a pound. They’re not lying about the amount they eat any more than you are. They do eat a lot.

Solving this mystery: Instead of envying them, realize that these slim friends are actually cause for celebration. The fact that they are not fat is living, breathing proof that being overweight needn’t mean you’re greedy, weak-willed, lazy or self-indulgent. Instead, in all probability, it may mean you are only metabolically less fortunate than they are. Doesn’t that make a lot more sense? Most people eat when they’re hungry and stop when they’re full. And if that’s the case, how could they be overeating? They’re doing what their bodies tell them to do. Which is why the critical factor is not how much you eat, but what you eat. And if you’re overweight, the what is likely an excess of carbohydrates.

Will give you advices on how to resolve day to day issues regarding real life:

• Navigate supermarket aisles to find controlled carb, low-sugar foods.

• Dine out with ease in elegant restaurants or even fast food chains.

• Attend dinner parties without compromising your weight loss program or offending your hosts.

• Explain your new way of eating to family and friends.

• Go on vacation or attend special functions without cheating.

• Eat comfortably with those whose style of eating re mains different from yours.

In order to help you understand your individual situation and where you do or don’t fit in, I’ll profile three typical obese patients. Several characteristic overweight patterns result from carbohydrate metabolism disorders that are instantly recognizable. Do any of the following sound achingly familiar?

Group A: “I Really Don’t Eat That Much!”

Group B: “I Crave Food Always!

Group C: “I Can’t Live Without This One Food!”

Group A: “I Really Don’t Eat That Much!”

• Are you overweight despite the fact that you don’t eat that much?

• Do you follow standard weight loss diets to the letter, yet make no headway losing weight, or get stuck far short of your goal?

• Have you noticed that many slim people definitely consume more food and more calories than you do?

• Do you find the amount of food you eat is really the least you can take in without feeling physically unsatisfied?

• Do you feel unfulfilled when you finish a so-called “balanced” meal?

• Do you find yourself losing and regaining the same 10 to 15 pounds?

• Do you gain weight even though you eat natural, low fat foods?

• Do you eat to make yourself feel better?

Group B: “I Crave Food Always!”

• Do you have an inexplicable obsession with food?

• Do you have a habit of eating late at night after dinner?

• Do you have a tendency to binge?

• Do you constantly crave sweets, pasta, bread and other high-carbohydrate foods?

• Do you have a strong desire to eat again within two hours of eating a filling meal?

• Do you consider yourself a compulsive eater?

• Have you ever said, “I only wish I could control my eating behavior”?

Group C: “I Can’t Live Without This One Food!”

• Do you have a single food or beverage you feel you could not do without?

• Would you pass up an elegant meal to have your most favorite food instead?

• Is there a specific food or beverage that makes you feel better as soon as you consume it?

• Do you ever think, “I wonder if I could be addicted to that food/beverage”?

• Do you feel this way about a category of foods (sweets, soft drinks, dairy products, grains, for example)?

Do most of your “yes” responses place you in Group A? Then you have a metabolic problem, manifested either by an inability to lose weight or keep it off, or by hunger or the inability to achieve and maintain satiety (a feeling of being full or satisfied). If most of your “yes” responses were to Group B questions, you probably have some form of glucose intolerance. You may suffer from hypoglycemia-more accurately called unstable blood sugar, or, in some cases, pre-diabetes.If most of your affirmative answers were to questions in Group C, you probably have an addiction to the food or beverage you singled out. Another term for the phenomenon is “food allergy” or the more accurate term of “individual food intolerance.

The Lemonade Diet has been around for more than 50 years. Its popularity soared several years ago after Beyonce announced she’d lost 20 pounds on the diet for the movie Dreamgirls .

The late Stanley Burroughs developed the Lemonade Diet, which is also known as the Master Cleanse or Maple Syrup Diet, as a detoxification and fasting program. It’s now also touted as a quick weight loss plan.

The severe plan involves drinking a lemon juice concoction, and not eating any food, for up to two weeks.

Of course, weight loss is inevitable when you stop eating and drink very few calories. But this kind of diet can also be dangerous to your health. Nutritionists point out that the Master Cleanse Diet plan is lacking in all the essential nutrients: calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat.

Lemonade Diet: What You Can Eat

No solid foods are allowed, nor are any supplements. You consume only the Master Cleanse elixir to keep you hydrated.

The plan calls for you to drink 6 or more servings daily of the lemonade drink. The only other options are a “salt water flush” of 2 teaspoons salt mixed in a quart of water in the morning, and an herbal laxative tea at night, if needed.

A single serving of the Master Cleanse drink consists of:

2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice

2 tablespoons grade-B organic maple syrup

1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper

10 ounces filtered water

After following this fast for 4-14 days, dieters are urged to slowly ease back into eating solid food, starting with items such as vegetable soup, followed by fruits and vegetables.

Lemonade Diet: How It Works

You will lose weight on the Lemonade Diet because the fast creates a serious calorie deficit. But chances are, what you’ll lose is water weight and muscle, not fat.

During the fast, you can expect to feel hungry and may get headaches, fatigue, dizziness, sluggishness, diarrhea, nausea, or constipation.

As for detoxification, your liver already does that. There is no medical evidence that fasting or “cleansing” diets actually rid the body of any toxins not otherwise discarded in bodily waste.

Experts’ Views

Dietitian Melinda Johnson, RD, doesn’t see anything positive about this diet plan.

“There is no scientific evidence that you need anything like this or any other detox program to cleanse your body or help you lose weight,” she says.

She suggests staying away from smoking if you want to avoid toxins. Otherwise, trust your liver to do its job.

Experts agree that such unbalanced plans are not only ineffective, but are also potentially dangerous, depending on how long you stay on them. Fasting can rob your intestines of healthy bacteria that aid digestion and boost immunity.

Another risk of rapid weight loss is losing lean muscle. Fitness expert Pamela Peeke, MD, says that without enough protein in the diet, your body must get protein from some other source — so you burn your own muscle mass. At the end of the fast, you weigh less, but your body will be higher in fat and lower in muscle.

Johnson agrees. “Lean muscle and fluids are the first to go on starvation diets, not belly fat,” she says.

Also, “whenever you follow an extremely restrictive diet plan, it is usually followed by an extreme binge,” Johnson says.

Her advice: Forget fasting and detoxing, since they are risky, don’t work long-term, and can forge an unhealthy relationship with food.

Instead, choose a weight loss plan that fits your lifestyle and is doable long-term.

When a special occasion calls for slimming down quickly, get more aerobic exercise and trim calories with a healthy, well-balanced diet plan. Quick weight loss doesn’t last. In most cases, the lost weight returns along with a few added pounds.

If you choose to follow this plan, be sure to only do it for a few days — and consult your doctor beforehand.

Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, is director of nutrition for WebMD. Her opinions and conclusions are her own.

Pureed carrots, meats, and mashed bananas are typical foods for babies without teeth, but they are also the latest weight loss trend to hit Hollywood.

Created by celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, The Baby Food Diet is the latest weight loss fad promising to curb cravings, allow eating on the run, and lose weight quickly.

Strange as it may seem, the plan is said to be popular, with celebrities rumored to have lost weight noshing on baby food.

It is a very simple idea — substitute tiny jars of baby food instead of higher calorie snacks and meals. Instead of real food that you chew, The Baby Food Diet consists of replacing one or more meals each day with jarred baby food. There are several variations of the plan — replace all food, one or more meals, or just as a replacement for high-calorie snacks.

Diet experts say it can work if calories are kept in check, but it is more likely just another diet gimmick that won’t last.

The Baby Food Diet: What You Can Eat

The Baby Food Diet has few specific guidelines on the quantity or type of baby food or the types and amounts of adult foods allowed for snacks or meals.

The basic plan calls for eating 14 jars of baby food throughout the day, with an option to have a healthy adult meal at dinner.

Another option is to have three healthy adult meals per day, swapping higher-calorie snacks for baby food.

The Baby Food Diet: How It Works

The theory: Bland, mushy baby food served in portion-controlled jars will prevent overeating and keep you satisfied with smaller portions of food. If you stick to the plan, you should get fewer calories and trigger weight loss.

But you will only lose weight if you control the types of baby food, number of jars, and the calories in the supplemental meals. Jars of baby food range from 15 to 100 calories.

One advantage is that most baby food is fortified with plenty of nutrients, free of additives and preservatives, and low in fat, sugar, and salt. And there is a wide variety to choose from, including organic baby food.

But baby food is designed for babies, not overweight adults. Babies and adults have different calorie and nutrient needs. Baby food also lacks fiber, calcium, and vitamin D.

There’s also a chance you’d wind up overeating and not losing any weight if you overeat the baby food and adult food.

There are no guidelines to help dieters keep the weight off. Are you going to eat baby food forever? And there aren’t any exercise recommendations.

The Baby Food Diet: What the Experts Say

At best, most adults are only going to tolerate The Baby Food Diet for a few days or a week, predicts American Dietetic Association spokesperson Jeanne Gazzaniga-Moloo, PhD, RD.

“It is an interesting concept that removes the pleasure of chewing and controls calories with portioned jars, but it could backfire and lead to binges or overeating too many little jars,” says Mooloo, a nutrition consultant based in Sacramento, Calif.

When you choose pureed food over natural foods you miss out on valuable nutrients and fiber.

“Eat an apple or carrot instead of a jar of applesauce or carrots. It is more satisfying to crunch and chew and you get the benefit of more fullness and fiber at much less expense,” Mooloo says.

Chewing is associated with feelings of fullness and satiety that can’t be replaced with pureed foods that go down easily and may make you feel hungrier.

But if you want to try baby food, Mooloo suggests storing a few jars of low-calorie fruits and sweets in your briefcase, drawer, or pantry for a quick, healthy, calorie-controlled alternative to higher-calorie treats.

The Baby Food Diet: Food for Thought

In my opinion, a diet of baby food is just another gimmick that will likely lose its appeal quickly because most adults will miss grown-up meals and the satisfaction and pleasure of chewing food with texture.

Applesauce, peaches and pears may sound tasty enough. But pureed meats are more likely to send dieters running in search of a more suitable plan.

My advice: Skip this diet in favor of a real-food diet rich in fruits and vegetables that are crunchy, full of fiber, and are much more satisfying than baby food.

There’s nothing new about taking in fewer calories to lose weight. What is new in fighting the battle of the bulge is a diet weapon that reduces calorie intake by managing hunger.

It’s called “satiety.” Not exactly a word that rolls off your tongue (pronounced “sa-TIE-atee”). It’s a diet and nutrition buzzword for the state of feeling full, one word in a new vocabulary that includes terms like “energy density,” “sensory-specific satiety,” and “volumetrics.”

If you’ve ever wondered why you fill up on a bowl of oatmeal but can eat three doughnuts before feeling satisfied, the reason is the comparative satiety levels of these foods. Susanna Holt, PhD, developed a satiety index, reported in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Taking 240-calorie portions of popular foods, she ranks them according to how they compare with a slice of white bread, which carries a rank of 100. Oatmeal has a high satiety level at 209, while a doughnut’s rank is 68. Interestingly, a 240-calorie serving of boiled potatoes rank highest at 323, but French fries score just 116.

Weapons for Your Diet Arsenal

Two experts in nutritional research and weight loss talked to WebMD about their very different approaches to helping people take in fewer calories and lose weight while eating nutritious, balanced meals, and without going hungry.

David L. Katz, MD, MPH, a medical correspondent on ABC’s Good Morning America, uses flavor management to turn off appetite, described in his new book, The Flavor Point Diet: The Delicious Breakthrough Plan to Turn Off Your Hunger and Lose the Weight for Good.

The strategy of Barbara Rolls, PhD, author of The Volumetrics Eating Plan and The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan, substitutes foods that have fewer calories by weight compared with those that are energy dense to feel full on fewer calories.

Turn Off Your Appetite

The variety of food we dieters eat may be doing us in. An abundance of different flavors at one meal overstimulates the brain’s appetite centers so you overeat before feeling full, says Katz, who is director of the Yale Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Conn. His Flavor Point diet is based on studies of sensory-specific satiety, or the tendency to feel full and stop eating when flavors are limited, and do just the opposite when flavors are varied.

Research shows that different types of flavors, such as sweet, salty, and sour, activate their own appetite centers in the brain. Katz says this is why you might feel full after eating a savory meal but still have room for dessert. “Once you turn on an appetite center, you must eat until it registers fullness. If you turn on many centers at once, you must eat until they’re all full.”

Katz calls the point at which satiety is reached the “flavor point,” and his diet plan restricts the types of flavors so you’ll reach it without overeating. This isn’t a cabbage soup type of diet. There’s plenty of variety in the six-week plan, based on lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

In phase one of the diet, each day’s meal plan has a flavor theme, such as pineapple, mint, pumpkin, or spinach. For example, on spinach day, the day’s menu features a spinach-feta omelet, and toast or cereal for breakfast; two snacks of seven-grain crackers or baby carrots with spinach-yogurt dip; spinach and turkey chef’s salad for lunch; and pasta fagioli with spinach marinara sauce, tossed spinach salad, and mixed berries for dinner.

In phase two, each meal or snack has its own flavor theme, and by phase three you’ll know how to restrict flavors without a plan.

Implementing this diet requires at least some basic skills in the kitchen. You’ll find few processed convenience foods in the plan. Katz tells WebMD the problem is the combination of ingredients found in many foods on supermarket shelves. “Some cereals contain more salt than potato or corn chips, and a popular pasta sauce has more sugar than chocolate ice cream topping. Yet we don’t taste the salt in cereal because there’s so much sugar that it masks the salt, just as the salt masks the sweetness of pasta sauce. We’re dealing with stealth sugars and salts. They have a powerful influence on how much we eat, but they’re below the radar screen.”

Katz’s wife, Catherine, developed the plan’s recipes, taking into account feedback from the couple’s five children. “The recipes have a strong French and Mediterranean influence, they’re family friendly, provide perfect nutrition, and they’re really delicious,” says Katz. “We’ve always eaten this way, and we never have to count calories or worry about our weight.”

Feeling Full Faster

Energy-dense foods pack a big calorie wallop in a little package. Think truffles or battered, deep-fried calamari. Energy density is a measure of calories per gram. Rolls, who is the Guthrie Chair of Nutritional Sciences at Pennsylvania State University in Pittsburgh, has studied how energy density affects satiety. “Satiety,” she says, “is the missing ingredient in most weight loss programs.”

Her volumetrics plan is based on eating balanced meals in which most of the calories come from foods with high volume and low energy density. For example, compare raisins (dried grapes) with fresh grapes. After eating one-fourth cup of raisins, you’d probably keep eating, but would you consume more than 1-3/4 cups of grapes? Both servings have 110 calories, but the grapes are plumped up naturally with water.

Water is a key ingredient in volumetrics. Not the water you drink with a meal. Studies show it doesn’t influence satiety. But the water in fruits and vegetables or in a broth-based soup swell the volume and make you feel full faster.

Rolls advises choosing foods in proportions recommended in the Food Guide Pyramid and modifying calorie intake on the basis of the following four levels of energy density:

Very low. Most fruits and vegetables, skim milk, and broth-based soups. Eat as much as you like.

Low. Many cooked grains; cereals with low-fat milk; low-fat meats, beans, and legumes; low-fat mixed dishes; and salads. Eat relatively large portions.

Medium. Includes meats; cheeses; high-fat mixed dishes; salad dressings; some snack foods. Eat in moderation.

High. Includes crackers; chips; chocolate candies; cookies; nuts; butter; and full-fat condiments. Control portions carefully.

One strategy for filling up faster is to have broth-based soup or a big, low-calorie density salad as a first course. “Our studies show they do reduce subsequent intake in the meal,” says Rolls. Don’t cheat and scarf down a salad loaded with cheese, ham, and indulgent dressing. “If your salad is high in calorie density, it’s worse. You don’t compensate later.”

How does understanding satiety help the person who overeats in social situations or in response to stress? “Knowledge empowers them,” says Katz. “No matter how stressed or unhappy you are, there’s a limit to how many apples, carrots, or raw almonds you’re going to eat, but not the candy corn or potato chips. It’s the processed foods that get the better of us.”

He tells WebMD there’s an interaction between emotional triggers, social triggers, and the kinds of foods people choose. Being savvy about sensory-specific satiety enables you to choose comfort foods wisely. “I have a house full of wholesome foods. If I’m eating for emotional reasons, I have a much greater ability to control portions than does someone whose house is booby-trapped.”

Rolls tells WebMD, “If people really have a problem with emotional eating, they need professional help. It may be an underlying problem. Satiety may not matter that much if you’re eating for emotional reasons.”

Satiety can, however, help people avoid “mindless eating” in front of the TV or at social gatherings. One strategy is to get in the habit of periodically asking yourself, “On a scale of one to 10, how hungry am I now?”

The problem of social eating is often compounded by alcohol plus the availability of palatable, energy-dense, varied foods served in large portions. “If you’re eating out occasionally, it’s OK to treat yourself,” says Rolls. “But if you eat out a lot, you need some strategies. Decide up front if you’ll order an appetizer instead of an entrée or split meals with someone. In a survey, about 70% of people said they eat everything in front of them whether they want it or not. If you rely on a food preparer to give you the right amount of food, you’re in trouble.”

Rolls offers one last tip, based on her recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Reducing portion size and energy density by 25% is the key. For example, instead of eating two slices of pizza, lower the energy density by substituting vegetables for some of the cheese, and eat just 1.5 slices.

“Slight reductions in portion size and energy density combined help people lose weight.”

The Fresh Diet: What It Is

It sounds like a dieter’s dream come true – chef-prepared meals delivered to your doorstep, and they taste so good you don’t even know you’re on a diet. The Fresh Diet is one of the nation’s fastest-growing fresh meal delivery services, even though customers must live within the program’s delivery areas and be able to pay at least $35 per day.

It’s ideally suited for busy people like South Florida dermatologist Melissa Lazarus, MD, who says she loves the food.

“I am super busy, and never have enough time or energy to eat healthy food, cut up vegetables, or prepare meals,” says Lazarus, who lost seven pounds using the Fresh Diet plan. “Although the plan is expensive, it costs less than eating out.”

Fresh Diet chief executive officer Zalmi Duchman founded the program in Miami Beach in 2005. At first, Fresh Diet meal plans were roughly based on the Zone Diet concept, of 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% healthy fats. But Duchman says the company is moving away from that model; currently, only 70% of the meals are Zone compliant.

The program allows you to set your goal weight and indicate how much exercise you get. You’re then assigned a daily calorie allotment that is divided into three meals plus two snacks (one sweet and one savory). Most women are prescribed a 1,200-1,400 calorie plan and most men get 1,600-1,800 calories. But the plan can go as high as 2,400 calories per day to meet individual needs.

Meals can be customized according to your food likes and dislikes. You can get vegetarian or gluten-free meals as well as those suitable for certain medical conditions, including food allergies, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and pregnancy.

“The food is prepared by expert chefs using natural ingredients … never frozen, and delivered to your doorstep every day except Saturday in insulated containers between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.,” Duchman says.

The executive chef oversees the nutrition component of the program using a nutrition data analysis program. Certified chefs prepare the food in four kitchens in Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. (The New York kitchen also services customers in New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia, and Boston.)

The Fresh Diet: What You Can Eat

You can choose from two different Fresh Diet programs. The chef’s choice plan allows you to indicate up to eight food dislikes, and starts at $35/day for a one-month plan. The premium choice plan, which allows unlimited dislikes, starts at $45 per day for the 31-day plan.

Clients select their menu items from among the tantalizing pictures on the company web site. They log on to the online meal planner to choose from a selection that includes four entrees, six side dishes (whole grains and vegetables), three desserts, and three savory appetizers/snacks. If you choose too many carbs and not enough vegetables, a pop up warning alerts you, but the system allows the client to be the ultimate decision-maker.

The Fresh Diet: What You Can Eat continued…

Beverages are not part of the plan. People following the Fresh Diet may drink as much water and other non-caloric drinks as they like. Be aware that any other beverages, such as alcoholic drinks, will contribute additional calories.

Here’s a daily sample menu (portion sizes vary according to allotted calorie levels):

Breakfast: Jumbo lump crab meat omelet with portobello mushrooms, spinach, and fruit

Lunch:Grilled chicken pumpkin salad with lettuce, tomato, and roasted sesame seeds

Dinner:Filet mignon with roasted sweet potatoes and jumbo asparagus spears

Hors D’oeuvre/Snack:Mixed salmon and avocado salad in chicory leaves

Snack/Dessert: Home-baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies

The Fresh Diet: How It Works

Although it’s called a “diet,” the Fresh Diet is actually a calorie-controlled, meal delivery system that lacks fitness, diet, and behavior-modification advice.

Clients have the option to sign up for a 7-, 14-, 21- or 31-day plan, with the flexibility to change orders or cancel meals within 48 hours of scheduled delivery. Going out of town? No problem; the plan offers a roll-over option so you won’t lose out on your meals. A concierge is available 24 hours a day to help clients with any meal issues or last-minute changes.

The dishes used in the Fresh Diet program are designed to be satisfying, even at lower calories levels.

“We use lots of vegetables, whole grains, high-fiber foods, and lean protein to make sure each meal will be filling,” Duchman says.

Most clients stay with the program for at least two months to meet their weight loss goals, Duchman says. Many clients, especially busy professionals, follow the program for 3-6 months, he says. At any time, clients can adjust their calorie levels or the number of meals ordered.

A toll-free number is provided on the Fresh Diet web site for questions for the concierge or nutritionist.

Fresh Diet: What the Experts Say

The Fresh Diet is a great way to get healthy, portion-controlled meals delivered to your door, says chef Sarah Krieger, MPH, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

“Think of this plan as an investment in your health,” Krieger says. “Pay attention to the portion sizes, types of foods served, and how it is prepared so you can use the plan to get a jump-start on eating healthy at home or in restaurants when you come off the plan.”

Krieger cautions dieters to be careful not to sabotage the diet by eating additional foods or drinking calorie-laden beverages.

And use some of that time you’re saving in the kitchen to make time for some exercise. Experts say regular physical activity is essential to any weight loss plan.

Consulting a registered dietitian after The Fresh Diet is an excellent way to learn to continue to eat healthy and lose weight with a customized plan tailored to fit your lifestyle.

Fresh Diet: Food for Thought

For anyone who can afford it, the Fresh Diet provides a convenient, balanced diet that can give a head start to a healthy diet. A month on the program costs $1,395 — more than most people would spend on groceries or eating out in a month.

It’s probably not a workable option for most families. But it is well suited for people who want to eat healthier but have no time to cook — and anyone else who wants to kick-start a healthy weight loss plan.

By eating the Fresh Diet foods, you can learn a great deal about portion control, which foods are healthy, and how delicious nutritious foods can taste. Add a dose of regular physical activity and the Fresh Diet is a good, if somewhat pricey, option to help you shed those extra pounds.

There are 2 active ingredients behind Quantrim

“Bladderwrack Focus” and “Cleavers Galium” there are 4 points to prove the effectiveness and safety of Quantrim:

Satiety moderation: Quantrim is enriched with vitamins and antioxidants. But the secret behind not having irritant craving for food is because it contains Seaweeds. Seaweeds keep a check on appetite. Leading to a natural appetite suppressant.

Targeted Fat Loss: Burning all stubborn fats in the following areas – Thighs, stomach and abdomen these areas are well known for the maximum fat that are very stubborn to burn.

Increase metabolic rate: Our weight gain or loss relay on how our thyroid glands functions. If thyroid glands decreased the amount of it’s thyroid stimulating hormone we gain weight. This means we have to maintain our (TSH) levels in order to lose weight. Bladderwrack (active ingredient) is an effective controller of (TSH). This means it controls the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone by now allowing it to decrease. TSH amount gets decreased once we get obese or not doing exercise and not eating on frequent levels.

No strange side effects: Quantrim will not keep you awake at night (insomnia) or affect any of your regular routines or lead to health issues. It is completely safe because of it’s natural ingredients, it makes a refreshing change to your lifestyle.
